By V. Evermore
Between the first breath and the last,
Lies a world of futures, dreams, and pasts.
A thousand beginnings beneath endless skies,
Waking wonders, and sleepy goodbyes.
A mother weeps as a child first cries,
While somewhere a soul closes its eyes.
One heart begins its delicate beat,
Another grows still in eternal sleep.
The earth does not pause for either one,
For the setting moon or the rising sun.
It cradles the newborn, it buries the old,
And keeps every story that time has told.
Tiny fingers reach for the light,
While weathered hands loosen their fight.
One learns to walk, another to rest,
Both held close to the universe’s chest.
And what is a lifetime, if not borrowed time?
A fleeting verse in an endless rhyme.
We bloom like flowers, then fall like rain,
Only to nourish the earth again.
Perhaps death is not the opposite of birth,
But another passage beyond this earth.
A doorway hidden where shadows creep,
Where the waking dream and the weary sleep.
For somewhere a child is learning to breathe,
While somewhere a loved one prepares to leave.
And the stars look down with ancient eyes,
On waking wonders and sleepy goodbyes.
So mourn the endings, but cherish the start,
For both leave fingerprints upon the heart.
And though we are but dust beneath endless skies,
We are love that lives, even after it dies.
For life is a whisper, and death is a sigh,
Two passing strangers beneath the same sky.
And eternity waits where the universe lies,
Between waking wonders and sleepy goodbyes.
